Standard 9: Professional Learning & Ethical Practice
Category: Professional Responsibility
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate her practice, particularly the effects of her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.
Evidence of my reflection process:
The following artifacts divulge my natural desire to improve and grow as an effective educator through reflection. My love for the Spanish language and cultures has given me the necessary skills to reflect and analyze myself, thoroughly and meaningfully.
Artifacts
These mini-quizzes are an example of a formative assessment that students received after exposure to a particular grammar form for nearly a week. The results of the assessment (the first quiz) required me to weigh my successes and failures in teaching my students how to properly conjugate Spanish grammar. The results from the mini-quiz (class average was 68%) also required me to find new ways to reteach the material to my students in order to ensure their comprehension. Since a majority of the class didn’t display proficiency, as an educator, I decided to reteach rather than move on to a new topic. After reteaching the material and retesting (the second quiz), my decision proved to be fruitful as the resultes from the second round of testing resulted in an above average means for each of my classes (class average was 81%). This indicated to me that overall my students had now achieved proficiency and comprehension of the Spanish grammar form.
During my time in student teaching with Mrs. Novales, she has given me the opportunity to teach full classes over the course of the semester. She would make comments and notes on my teaching, on my lessons, and on my scripts which helped me immensely during my post-lesson reflections. These regular evaluations allowed me to become fully aware of my strengths, weaknesses and overall growth as a Spanish educator.
As an educator, I have purposed myself to take time each day to reflect on each of my classes, each lesson and all of my interactions with my students. Though not required, I set a personal goal to write notes, critiques and changes for each of my lesson plans in order to more accurately document the personal and professional growth I have made this semester. These records have helped me evaluate my progress as a reflective, urban educator and is a technique that I will continue to utilize throughout my teaching career. A few of these journals have been included so as to display my reflective thought process and its refinement of my teaching skills.
Reflection
To ensure effective and successful learning in my classroom, I will continue to conduct similar reflective exercises so that I can continuously adapt my practices to meet the needs of each learner. I believe that reflection and revision are of utmost importance for educators whether working in the suburbs or in the thick of urban education. Learners will be more successful with their academics when surrounded by educators who understand and care about their growth, learning styles and academic disparaties
